Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
