California's Governor Confirms He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor commented when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I won't do that."

The governor's tenure as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic

Newsom has emerged as a notable adversary of the Trump administration, using his social media accounts and advocating for a initiative that would expand Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor does not care about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary announced a strategy to cut federal funds from the state and suggested eliminating the authority to grant CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," he stated, after a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in fatalities and casualties.

Newsom's office pointed out that the U.S. government had reauthorized the driver's employment repeatedly, which enabled him to secure a trucking license under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously stated he was holding back additional funds from the state for ignoring language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, fails to grasp federal law," the governor's team said in a previous release countering the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: The state's truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A this month's survey showed that 72% of Democrats and almost half of voters believed that Newsom must consider running for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has dropped from an typical level of over 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.

"The idea that a guy who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, alone, extraordinary," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the American people."
