Emerging Foreign Policy Vision Identifies Europe's Core Issue: An Alleged Lack of Racism?

Throughout his first term, analysts frequently advised that Donald Trump's remarks should be interpreted earnestly instead of word for word. Yet, subsequent events indicate that this approach could have reversed the logic.

A recently unveiled U.S. National Security Strategy alongside multiple comments from administration officials, Trump proxies, and the former president have precipitated potentially one of the most profound crises for Atlanticism, the doctrine that has sustained stability and freedom in Europe since 1945.

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety

Whereas Trump's earlier complaint focused on Europe's alleged failure to fund its own security, his rhetoric has now embraced a significantly more disturbing outlook.

Tinged with racial prejudice and a staggering contempt for Europe's political institutions and officials, he has issued warnings about the potential of civilizational erosion on a continent he has rarely visited and has predominantly seen from a distance.

"A lengthy discussion lacking in clear ideological coherence is instead replete with another element: the muddled anxiety of an older man facing a changing world."

A conspiratorial Maga perspective, which has shaped contentious American border and policing policies, now appears to be shaping the administration's prism of Europe.

The Racist Core

According to this logic, immigration from the global south causes a weakening of European societies, rendering them "feeble" under "foolish" leadership and paving the way for their demise. It constitutes an unabashedly xenophobic ideology, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right movements across Europe.

Although the general thrust of this race-baiting is not new, its specific implications for European security are critically important.

In the view of the president and his adherents—including tech magnate Elon Musk, who recently advocated for the breakup of the EU—all politics is fundamentally a deal. But, whereas he once claimed was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a declining Europe is undeserving because of its embrace of multiculturalism.

Weakening from Within

In his interview, Trump himself connects these dots in a kind of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that Russia's Vladimir Putin wants a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures between Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by actively undermining European unity—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most consequential moment for Europe in decades, amid a devastating war in Ukraine and rising Russian-hostile actions across the continent.

While Europe draw closer to Kyiv facing persistent threats of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has constructed a rationale for not listening to his allies.

The European Response

This situation requires a robust response from European leadership. Although certain leaders, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been blunt in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a strategy of attempting to appease the White House.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on the mayor of London.

The spokesperson stated, "The Prime Minister has a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on working with both to deliver stronger results for the British public."

The undeniable truth is that the president intends what he says and says them repeatedly. The time has come to stop pretending otherwise.
