Government Cuts Back US Flights as Shutdown Stretches On

With the unprecedented federal government standoff stretches toward day 38, US skies will become less congested. This doesn't apply for US airports.

Safety Measures Enacted

Donald Trump’s air traffic agency has said flights are being reduced to uphold air traffic control security during the federal government funding lapse, now the longest recorded and with no apparent progress of a solution between GOP lawmakers and Democrats to end the federal budget impasse.

Aviation authorities pinpointed “busiest routes” where the FAA says air traffic requires reduction by 4% by 6am ET on Friday, a step requiring airlines to call off thousands of journeys and create a chain reaction of scheduling issues and setbacks at key American travel hubs.

Administration Remarks

The federal transportation leader, Sean Duffy, wrote on online platforms Thursday that the decision was “not about politics” but rather “about assessing the data and alleviating growing safety concerns in the system as air traffic professionals continue working without pay”.

“Air travel remains secure today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the forward-thinking steps we are taking,” he added.

Travel Disruptions

Specialists anticipate hundreds if not thousands of flights may be scrapped. These reductions could represent up to 1,800 flights and more than 268,000 seats total, based on an calculation by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Targeted Terminals

The involved terminals including numerous states include the highest-volume locations across the US – such as Atlanta, Charlotte, DEN, DFW, MCO, LAX, MIA and San Francisco. Within major metropolitan areas – including New York, Houston and Chicago – various airports will be involved.

Each of the three air terminals operating in the nation's capital region – IAD, BWI Airport and DCA – will be affected, inevitably causing delays and cancellations for lawmakers as well as the flying public.
