Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
