JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution Seeks to Fix the Anime's Biggest Issue
JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is not precisely an original film. Rather, the recent film from the JuJutsu Kaisen fantasy saga serves as a collection of the anime's second season merged with the opening installments of its upcoming season, which kicks off the Culling Games storyline from the original manga. This positions Execution, which just got a latest teaser, the first way to view the commencement of the upcoming season ahead of its 2026 January debut. The movie premieres in cinemas in Japan starting November 7, and in North American regions on December 5.
The Culling Games Arc
In the Culling Game arc, Elite sorcerer Yuta Okkotsu finally joins the show and is charged by jujutsu officials to execute his fellow student Yuji Itadori. Their long-awaited clash occurs for the very first time on the cinema screen, and if the artists at Mappa have an exceptional piece as the two-part Thunderclap episodes waiting in the wings for viewers this festive season, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution may turn out to be the present that everyone has hoped for.
The Thunderclap Issue
"The Thunderclap sequence" from the second season is widely regarded as among the best moments in the history of anime, notwithstanding the significant debate in 2023 when the episodes first debuted. It was reported that the animation team were enduring crunch conditions to the point, and the broadcast edition that premiered at the time was not fully polished and allegedly not what the team initially intended.
The Intense Confrontation
The episode showcases a long-awaited battle between two strong jujutsu users, the King of Curses and the Eight-Handled Sword. It boasts unique visual techniques, superb cinematography, and intense action. A subsequent Blu-ray release allowed the team to insert new moments to flesh out the fight. So it was plausible Execution could enhance the fight further. However, examining the recent teaser, it's hard to tell if that battle has received any additional treatment. It'd be a shame if it didn't, because a moment so epic has to be seen on the largest display with the finest quality available.
Season Two's Achievement
The second installment of JuJutsu Kaisen elevated the franchise to become the award-winning series of 2024, and when the Thunderclap episodes were released back to back, it was the topic of conversation for multiple weeks in the series' fanbase. Audiences were aware of the production challenges, which made them appreciate what they viewed even more. People eagerly awaited to see if the disc version, made available on March 18, would feature extra content to the battle or to see if it was improved in any way, and were overjoyed to see exactly that, alongside reshades, smoother movement, and different color grading.
The Movie's Opportunity
But the physical release can only improve what has already been presented in the broadcast edition, whereas the film has the potential to properly present the moment with more adjustments and completely new animated sequences.
A Masterpiece
As it stands, these two episodes act as the masterpiece of JuJutsu Kaisen, and should be given special attention by the animation team, particularly given the issues they faced at the time. It's drawn the focus of anime fans all over the planet, and the Culling Games arc is one of the most anticipated anime arcs of next year. If Mappa wants to begin the year strongly, showcase the series' best moment once again in cinemas with the best interpretation we've seen yet.
