Weather experts are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be chilly, making warm wraps vital, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Commuting is expected to be impacted.
• Travelers are advised to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Set to Plummet Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Warnings Issued

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this signified the weather could to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.

The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in good health, wrapping up warm is absolutely key.
