Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Rebuke

Figures from across the partisan aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to censure Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Social Media Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post then pivoted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a significant sum.

A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was swift and scathing.

This is a disgusting and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. She pointed to prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks

Some Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with addiction and psychological well-being some families face.

Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly challenged members in his party to defend the comments.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence without reservation following the killing of a different political figure.

A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
