The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit series wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does the creator Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“There are some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
