The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
